Sata Raid Hardware or Software:

I'm setting up a File Server 1TB approx and will be looking to get a Dell.

The dell server is 6 x 250 Sata Drives Running raid 5:

PowerEdgeTM 1800

With a C6 RAID 5, CERC SATA RAID controller (min3 / max6 HDD's)

I'm looking to put on OpenFiler(.com) or any flavour of Linux with Samba not to fussed.

I was wondering if anyone knows of issues with running Linux on SATA raid. I've seen a few things on google where people where having trouble.

Do you sugest Raid 5 Software or Hardware for this, and does anyone know a flavour that handles this well..

Thanks.

Paul

I have successfully used software raid for a Dell 670 on raid 0 on SATA disk .
Though software raid is easier to use , hardware raid is a better chouce if you have the money . Hardware raid will take the load from the CPU's for taking care of the raid and will leave that task to the CPU on the raid card . Having said that , I have not tried hardware raid on SATA disk , I have tried them on SCSI disks and have been fine for me with the same scheme , that is raid 5 .

Good luck
