SATA Optical Drives?

Hi

So I had a computer running Windows XP/Kubuntu dual boot fine, until I decided it was time for a Conroe system.

Hardware:
Intel E6400
2 GB Wintec Ram
Abit AB9 Pro
Seagate 320 GB 7200.10 (SATA)
Seagate 160 GB 7200.9 (IDE w/ SATA converter)
Lite On DVD+RW/-RW (IDE w/ SATA converter)
Lite On DVD-ROM (IDE w/ SATA converter)
Geforce 7900GT
Enermax 500w

The computer kept crashing at first for some reason, I

think maybe the RAM voltage becuase I increased that and the stability got better. Installed Windows on the 2nd try. However when I try to install Ubuntu it doesn't get past the "Mounting FS" stage, i.e. you put in the live CD, press enter on install. The first thing says ok but the second thing that should get an OK next to it doesn't happen, and then the screen goes black and there is like a cursur blinking in the upper left but no prompt, and that will go on indefinately as far as I can tell.

Any ideas? Is it the SATA? I'm trying to avoid the IDE on the MB becuase it requires a driver (the 965 chipset doesn't have native IDE), and i figured that would be a problem in Linux.

I know the e6400 has EMT64 but its not AMD64 so I use the regulard 386 kernel right? I can't figure out why it won't mount the filesystem.

while you are waiting for a better reply,

have you tried removing the jack ide/sata and letting Linux detect it as an Ide?

Linux won't detect it is as IDE. The IDE controller on this mobo is add-on and apparently Linux at least prior 2.6-18 doesn't recognize this controller. After 2.6-18 it might, but I don't have anything handy with that kernel to try it on.

Also, if you use a USB cdrom, or Sata (probably) I would think it would work. I have used USB cdroms to boot this mobo and it works. Now getting an installation on it is another task that I have yet to conquer.
