SATA hardisk not intializing in Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES Ver 3
I m trying to install red hat enterprise linux ES ver 3 on Intel 915 Mother board wih Bios version EV91510A.86A.0213 , The CPU P4 3.0GHZ HT ,WITH 512 MB RAM , I have instal ONE SATA hardisk on SATA PORT 0 -Of Segate of model ST3160827AS & Capacity 160GB also i have installed one 80gb ide hardisk on PATA MASTER and ONE CD-ROM on PATA SALVE.
Now when i m trying to install red hat enterprise Linux ES version 3 on the above PC. only PATA MASTER HARDDISK is initialized when i try to create partations. My SATA harddisk is not detected automatically. while it is being detected in BIOS. now i think the problem is with SATA controller not being detected. as it must not b eting loaded during installation.
As being new to LINUX i dont know whether my linux ver support SATA . if it doesnt what do i need to do so that my SATA hardisk gets detected.
or can any body sed me a link from where i can download latest ver os red hat linux , coz i have to install Oracle 11i and apps prod on the same.
Thanks in advance
Ravi

As far as I know no Redhat/FC/Centos distro have sata support to install with. Why they never have gotten it there by now is beyond me. Many other distros do have sata install support now. The RH/FC/CT teams are just falling behind. The only way I could install was install on a plain ide then using knoppix live cd and partiamge copy the partitions and installl the grub boot loader.

Fedora has had SATA support at least since FC5...
jayasimhareddy_sunki:
one does not install irqpoll; that is a boot parameter, i.e. somehing you type after "boot" when you're launching the installer, like this:
boot: all-generic-ide irqpoll
Not sure whether that will work for RHEL3, though, it's aging badly by now. Are you sure Oracle can't be intalled on Fedora? It's pretty much the same thing.
And that intel board unfortunately is a known source of troubles. Make sure you set it to AHCI in bios; you may also need to use this boot parameter in addition to the irqpoll:
pci=nommconf

FC5 has quite a bunch of problems with SATA HDD. I tested it several times and dropped. But the newly issued SuSE 10.1 is absolute marvel to have. Once installed it's stunning piece of OS, and later when updated with "Smart" package manager is just a balm to my heart. Ever since it was installed I had no issues with it whatsoever. Highly recommended!!!
