Question Sata Harddisk gives warnings on boot witch end up with error (it works but it's slow)

I get the following warnings in /var/log/warn . And also these annoying outputs on boot .( It's not my boot drive) The disk it refers to is an external eSATA western digital 500GB vfat, witch doesn't support S.M.A.R.T error logging and long self tests of course , it is able only to give a short output about its condition to smartctl. Also if I try to disable the Read cache on this hard disk with hdparm -W 0 /dev/sda, at /intit.d/boot.local it is done but it's useless because the error ocures before boot.local is loaded I am afraid . What can I do? And is this thing dangerous for my data I stored on this hard drive (I get the same things even if I connect it to the other controller, ICH8 for ex. ). And one more thing I can't change the queue_depth in quefile:///sys/block/sda/device/queue_depth with the command :: $ echo 31 > /sys/block/sda/device/queue_depth as libata suggests in their FAQ to enable NCQ, the only value it accepts is 1 and not 31.Can I enable NCQ if it is supported or is there a way to stop it from messing with the DPO and FUA scsi functions with smartd (every time I play with smartd I the disk is not detected at the end, so I don;t know how to use it correctly). All my disks are detected as scsi, maybe because i did the stupid thing to have AHCI function on when I did the installation-I don't know anymore.?should i just give the option with hdparm -W... to disable cashe on boot.local and leave it there? Thanks in advance for your time.

Device: /dev/sda, appears to lack SMART Error log; disabling -l error (override with -T permissive Directive)

Check the LKML for those error messages and you'll find it has to do with kernel SATA chipset support which improves with every new kernel version. Installing the latest version of smartd may help wrt those messages, check their changelog.

Thanks for your reply unSpawn!I am afraid you are right. Buy the way I have the latest smart(smartd) package 5.37. but also I don't know if a special configuration is required in my smartd.conf , because it keeps saying that:

Try adding '-d sat' to the device line in the smartd.conf file.
Feb 13 10:56:05 sharp smartd[4196]: For example: '/dev/sdb -a -d sat'
Feb 13 10:56:05 sharp smartd[4196]: Device: /dev/sdc, opened
Feb 13 10:56:05 sharp smartd[4196]: Device /dev/sdc: ATA disk detected behind SAT layer
Feb 13 10:56:05 sharp smartd[4196]: Try adding '-d sat' to the device line in the smartd.conf file.
Feb 13 10:56:05 sharp smartd[4196]: For example: '/dev/sdc -a -d sat'
Feb 13 10:56:05 sharp smartd[4196]: Device: /dev/sdd, opened
Feb 13 10:56:05 sharp smartd[4196]: Device /dev/sdd: ATA disk detected behind SAT layer
Feb 13 10:56:05 sharp smartd[4196]: Try adding '-d sat' to the device line in the smartd.conf file.
Feb 13 10:56:05 sharp smartd[4196]: For example: '/dev/sdd -a -d sat'
Feb 13 10:56:05 sharp smartd[4196]: Device: /dev/sda, opened
Feb 13 10:56:05 sharp smartd[4196]: Device: /dev/sda, not found in smartd database.

and I dont know how to configure it correctly because i am confused about the scsi operations that are performed from this disk and also I dont like the fact that all my hard disks have names in fstab like:scsi-SATA_WD_My_Book_WD-WCAS81367378-part1

actually it's not slow right know:
sharp:~ # hdparm -Tt /dev/sdd

/dev/sdd:
Timing cached reads: 2574 MB in 2.00 seconds = 1287.52 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 232 MB in 3.02 seconds = 76.77 MB/sec

Right now I have switched my bios to IDE everything and not AHCI or AHCI control mode and I have plug everything on ICH8 controller. I dont like the way jmicron behaves at start up. And after that all my disks are under ata_piix driver not ahci anymore. but the problem remains.Do you know how to conf smartd.conf for this specific hard disk?

If you can poll /dev/sdb for info adding "-a -d sat" on the commandline then it's just adding that to the /dev/sdb line in your /etc/smartd.conf.

Ok! I did that, no change on the output.the device is not in the smartctl database, maybe that's why I get all these errors Emask and not because I have a problem. As for the NCQ this drive does nto support it. And in general it's an AHCI function as I see and due to the new SG_IO (libata - hdparm) any of these commands it's enabled by default if it is available(so I disabled it to all devices(by ide mode), I don't see something special with this featue).Af course I don't know why it keeps playing with FUA and DPO bullshit scsi stuff at boot. Thanks for your help!.
