Red face SATA Drives - RH9

Hello, I am new to the linux community, have used Linux Reg Hat 9 before, but that was before sata raid was on the market. So what I am strugling with is the following: I have to do a linux Red Hat 9 installation on an intel system, sound like a contrast to me but anyways, the system has 2x250gb Sata drives which has been plugged into a SIS964 chipset.

When I enter the setup I can't find any related drivers for this chipset nor does the setup pick up the drives at all.

I dowloaded a linux driver for the SIS964 chipset, but how the hell do I install this piece of work?! the file has got a tar extension?!

If anyone can please assist me in completing this installation I would be for ever greatfull!!

Regards

PS: I am looking forward to get to know the Linux OS!

First you need to untar it:
If it is <package-name>.tar.gz use:
$ tar xzf <package-name>.tar.gz
If it is <package-name>.tar.bz2 use:
$ tar xjf <package-name>.tar.bz2
If it is just <package-name>.tar use:
$ tar xf <package-name>.tar

now 'cd' into the directory that is created. There may be a file called README. You should read it. There may laso be a file called INSTALL. You should read this too. If you still have problems after this then post again with what you tried and how it failed on you.

PS: This forum is for introducing yourself. You should not post technical questions here. Please use a more appropriate forum in the future.

PPS: Your thread title is terrible and is not condusive to getting you any sort of decent help. Please read this for reasons why: http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html

PPS: Redhat 9 is old and unsupported. Is there any reason you cannot install something newer? I bet if you tried Fedora Core 4 instead your SATA drives would work out of the box...

Question Could not reach the console to type the extract command, from setup.

Hi,

I was unable to access any type of command console where I could use the extract command. This is a new Installation of Red Hat 9, managed to get the Installation to ask me for new drivers where I could select the a: drive to be mounted but the files in the drive is still in the *.tar format, which is not recognized.

Other wise I must invest in a new Fedora Core 4 Package?!

Another question would Fedore Core 4 be compatible with Red Hat 9, because these are going to be 2 servers which has to communicate with each other?!

Thanks a lot for the quick response.

Right. I forgot that you can't really boot it can you? It's a catch 22, you need to install the drivers to access your disk, but you must access your disk to install the drivers. I think you are going to have to install something that can recognize your disks immediately. It may be possible to use a current livecd to get the machine booted, but this may be a lot of hassle.

The only thing you need to invest is the time it takes to download and a few blank CDs. It's free you know

Of course it will be compatible. Linux is Linux (and even Linux is Unix!) no matter what flavour you choose to use.
