Sapphire ATI Radeon 9250 (PCI) - Blank screen on startx

Hey everyone. I just built a new computer, and I'm having a bit of trouble getting my graphics card to work with anything but the vesa driver. I've tried installing the fglrx module from ATI, using the radeon module (which I'd prefer), and messing around with configuration settings quite a bit... All of it will give me an "Input not supported" error on my monitor (Acer AL1716 17"), or just no input at all... Here's some information:

OS: Slamd64 (Slackware clone)

Now, I don't really play games on this machine, but I'd like to be able to use hardware scaling
in mplayer... Otherwise it just takes an insane amount of processing power... If anybody's got any ideas I'd really appreciate them... Also, it might be helpful to know if there's any way to just stop X completely when the screen seems to have stopped responding... I know CTRL-ALT-Backspace should do it, but it often doesn't respond, and then I have to sit there rebooting until I find something that works in the configuration....

Thanks for the time everyone!

Update: It's got something to do with the dual head configuration.... I've got one port on the back for DVI, and one for standard VGA... I have a VGA monitor, and that's the one that's plugged in... Apparently the VGA port is the secondary device... I've added a MonitorLayout option to attempt to get it to use the VGA only, but that's not working... Any ideas? 'MonitorLayout "NONE, TMDS"', and 'MonitorLayout "TMDS, NONE"' both blank screen... Plugging the monitor into the DVI port (with an extender), produces the same results, as well.
