Sane will NOT detect installed scanner!

Please help!!!

Have an HP 5370C scanner (USB). YAST detects the scanner but I cannot get the TEST option to work. However, sane-find programme will find the scanner. The /dev/usbscanner is present and permissions given for everyone; the backend avison.conf is present. I have read the HOW-TOs, tried everything, and yet the frontend programmes simply do not recognise any scanner present.

What can I do? (And how can I do it . . . ?)

Would be most grateful for help. What hair I have left is being torn out . . . . .

check the permissions is avison.conf executable? also check ddl.cof(i think; not @ home to double check) that avison is uncommented.
