Samsung SCX 4200 printer problem.

I reloaded Ubuntu 16.04 from the latest version. Now the printer will not work.
When I look for my printer in the loading area no SCX 4200 printers are listed just printers with (example) SCX 4X24, 5x26, etc. This is a very popular laser jet printer what is going on?
When I send a job to the printer it doesn't seem to go, but the printer says it it is ready. Sounds like the drivers, but they don't have a listing for this printers drivers as I said above. Why did they delete the driver setup for the SCX-4200?

The only thing I can think of at this point is to reload 16.04 all over again, but that would just load the same file without my printer information. But I shouldn't have to do this, HELP.

Could this be your problem (it affects Ubuntu and any distro using the relevant Ubuntu repos)?

(read from my first post on the thread...)

Thanks hydrurga for the reply. I know very little about working wit terminals, however I will give it a go and see what develops.

I was also thinking about using package manager to delete Cups and then reinstalling it, what do you think?

What would be the command (terminal) to reinstall all the Samsung printer files?

I don't think that is the problem, I received this note when checking to see if I needed any dependencies :
Reading package lists... Done
W: http://www.openprinting.org/download...2/Release.gpg: Signature by key F8897B6F00075648E248B7EC24CBF5474CFD1E2F uses weak digest algorithm (SHA1)

I don't know what this means and could sure use some help.

That's only a warning and you can ignore it. What are the results of dpkg -l '*cups*' ?

Sorry for the misplaced inverted comma in my command - now amended. I don't think it should make any difference though.

You're missing all the library packages (names starting with 'lib'). Are you sure you included the entire output from that command?

Maybe this? https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1758293

"You should try downloading driver from Samsung website:
http://org.downloadcenter.samsung.co...xDriver.tar.gz

and run ./cdroot/autorun as root (super user) to configure it.

I hope this will help you. "

Hi Jefro, haven't heard from you in a while. I hope all is well.

Haven't tried what you suggested yet because on Ubuntu it has always said/implied to use their drivers because they recommend them, is this a lot of BS? Because after all, it's their recommendation that is not working.

Also, I don't know how to unload a tar file.
and after it's unloaded do I just run this command in a terminal "./cdroot/autorun"

That listing looks ok as far as I can see, and doesn't evidence the problem I originally thought it might, although I don't know which Samsung SCX 4200-specific packages you should have.

Have you tried downloading and running the Samsung drivers?

or

Got out of Hospital yesterday, sorry I haven't replied.

In my searches for help there were a couple of posts that said Samsung drivers wouldn't work on the latest versions of Ubuntu.

The Behemnet web site lists old drivers but I can't see any way to download them.

I just can't believe Ubuntu has left everyone high and dry with no way to fix Samsung SCX 4200 driver packages, when they recommend using their drivers!!!

Can you tell me how to delete the old drivers on my system and the printer so I can let the system load whatever is new out there, if anything.

Hi Lola Kews; sorry to hear you have been unwell and we hope you are feeling better now;

I wonder if you have tried just selecting those SCS-4x24 drivers; presumably ubuntu has set up a printer config for you for your SCX? If you right-click on its icon; (meaning the icon for your SCX-4200 in the PRINTERS folder) and look in Printer Properties; and look in Make & Model ...... what do you see please? (If you copy and paste it back here)

to the right of that is a CHANGE button; if you click on that; it classifies all the options by manufacturers: if you click on Samsung and scroll down the list .. I had wondered if you selected the SCX x24 series drivers: there are three listed: if any of them worked for you eg pxlmono is one of the open source drivers;

The OpenPrinting website has been blocked for a couple of days, so I can't check it out

how curious that 7 yrs ago https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardwareSupp...rintersSamsung your printer worked "out of the box" in ubuntu

(If you copy and paste it back here) You can't copy and paste from that screen, I know what you are talking about though. It's Samsung SCX-4200 series. However their are no printer drives of that description in the database.

I had wondered if you selected the SCX x24 series drivers: there are three listed: if any of them worked for you eg pxlmono is one of the open source drivers; I've done this, and yes I even tried one of the SCX X24 drivers out of frustration, it didn't work. The database folder you are talking about does not have any SCX-4200 printer under Samsung. Another weird thing is no matter what printer you click on to try, you receive a note "Recommended", pure BS!

The OpenPrinting website has been blocked for a couple of days, so I can't check it out
That doesn't surprise me, there are a lot of people raising Heck about no drivers for this printer. It is very reliable when working, why they pulled out the drivers is what everyone is asking.
Ubuntu hasn't answered this question on their website either, just people complaining, with no answers to the problem.

how curious that 7 yrs ago https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardwareSupp...rintersSamsung your printer worked "out of the box" in ubuntu
7 years ago a lot of things worked that no longer do. In the case of printers, several times in the research I found observations that stated drivers that worked no longer was because of the changes in the new versions of Ubuntu software, could be I guess but really don't know!

Answers to your questions are after your text in the above quote.

Thanks very much for trying to help, it is really appreciated.
