Samsung E900 mobile phone, GPRS modem & Slackware 10.1

Hi all,

I'm trying to connect to the internet using my Samsung E900 mobile phone as a GPRS modem. I'm having some problems as I'm not sure how to get my phone and Slackware talking.

When I connect my phone (via the USB cable), the following is recorded in /var/log/messages.

Feb 14 00:47:00 humdrum kernel: Initializing USB Mass Storage driver...
Feb 14 00:47:01 humdrum kernel: usbcore: registered new driver usb-storage
Feb 14 00:47:01 humdrum kernel: USB Mass Storage support registered.
Feb 14 00:47:04 humdrum kernel: usb 2-3: new full speed USB device using ohci_hcd and address 3
Feb 14 00:47:05 humdrum kernel: scsi0 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices
Feb 14 00:47:10 humdrum kernel: Vendor: Agere Model: MMCSD Card Rev: 1.00
Feb 14 00:47:10 humdrum kernel: Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 00
Feb 14 00:47:10 humdrum kernel: Attached scsi generic sg0 at scsi0, channel 0, id 0, lun 0, type 0
Feb 14 00:47:10 humdrum udev[4649]: configured rule in '/etc/udev/rules.d/udev.rules' at line 24 applied, 'sg0' becomes '%k'
Feb 14 00:47:10 humdrum udev[4649]: creating device node '/dev/sg0'

I see no mention of USB modems and whatnot here! Can anyone help me? I'm totally lost.

Thanks in advance,

I've made some progress, i've found a program called 'GPRS easy connect' (gprsec) which sorts out the dial up connection and whatnot for me, all it needs from me is the port where my phone is connected. I've tried using 'sg0' but i get a message asking if the phone is switched on (which it is). do i have to mount my phone or something? please help!

many thanks,

getting further...

I've now recompiled my kernel including 'usb modem CDCACM'.

Now I have (i presume) my modem on ttyACM0

If i point GPRSEC to this it still wont connect, but now it says 'unable to connect'.

Any thoughts?

I left this a while and came back to it with a fresh head...

tried to talk to my mobile....

echo atdt123 > /dev/ttyACM0

which made my phone dial 123, so i know it's connected and working.

went back to gprsec, set my mobile phone model to D600 instead of E900.

VICTORY! it connects!

just one small problem now...

when i connect my phone via USB, /dev/ttyACM0 is created, but with root as the owner. i don't want to have to chmod it everytime i connect it up as a normal user so does anyone know how to assign the required permissions automatically? i looked at fstab but i'm unsure. does anyone have the answer?

if someone could point me in the right direction it would be a great help.

thanks,

speed has jumped right up since i set up correct DNS servers. had to change a few things which i can't remember off the top of my head, but i am pleasantly surprised by the increase in speed.

hope this helps someone else out there.
