S3 savage4 video

I have been having troubles with my video card. I have tried many things, but the current driver for it is the generic vesa driver if im correct in getting that information from the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. I was looking through my drivers directories and saw s3 drivers. I was going to try to use one of those but i dont know where to start. I tried the command insmod s3_drv.o and then use the modprode command to use it. I dont even know how to do that but i have been reading on linux modules and lkm's for the past hour. I got an error saying: s3_drv.o: couldn;t find the kernel version the module was compiled for. Anyway im using Slackware 10.1 and my problem is that everything is too big, and i tried changing the display settings but everthing is still too big. Hope thats enough information, thanks for any help or information.

I dont know what agpgart is, what does it do. I have been messing with xorgconfig and been changing things. I have a different driver choosen but I think i have the wrong monitor settings because every time i startx the system locks up on me doing nothing and i have to restart. That driver at that site was only for windows systems not linux, i dont know why it even mentioned linux.

lsmod:
Module
snd-pcm-oss
snd-mixer-oss
uhci
ehci-hcd
usbcore
snd-bia82xx
gameport
snd-ac97-codec
snd-pcm
snd-timer
snd-mpu401-uart
snd-rawmidi
snd-seq-device
snd
snd-page-alloc
soundcore
via-rhine
mii
crc32
pcmcia_core
ide-scds

My kernel version is 2.4.29, I didnt post wether or not the module was used or not, if you need to know just ask. Thanks for helping so far, I have been still messing around with the xorgconfig file. I think the driver i have just sucks for the card, I'm not saying the video card isnt cheap but i think it can display things better than it does. Its an S3 savage just in case i didnt mention that before. Thanks again

Yea nevermind, I'm pretty sure i have the right drivers for the card. The driver is the savage_drv.o driver. I have been playing with the resolution and color bit rate for the last couple of hours and I think the limitations of the card have been met, and well those limitations are crappy ones. So I think im going to break down and buy a different card with more know drivers like nvidia or ati. Anyway thanks for the help and if you have anything else to mention I would be interesteh. Thanks again

Hi,
Just now had a motherboard fail, bought a new one. My old Matrox G200 would not fit in the new-style AGP slot, so I put in a Diamond Stealth III S540 which I happened to have lying around. Looks to me like it is the same card.

I found out that it seems to work tolerably well with the plain S3 savage support. I ran xorgconfig and chose that, and the entry in xorg.conf looks like this:

# Device configured by xf86config:

Section "Device"
Identifier "** S3 Savage (generic) [savage]"
Driver "savage"
#VideoRam 32768
# Insert Clocks lines here if appropriate
EndSection

I am running a patched-up mixture of Slackware 10.1 and 10.2 and man X says at the bottom of the manpage that it is version 6.7.0. Running kernel 2.6.10 right now, with module support for AGP. From cat /proc/modules the apparently relevant line is

amd64_agp 9096 1 - Live 0xe0dea000

With this card and a now-old IBM C72 monitor, I get 1280x1024 resolution at 24-bit color, so it would seem it is all working well enough to suit me.

Sorry this will probably not help the original poster. Too late. But I put this note here in case someone else comes along and looks for this thread.
