i have just purchased a router. i have slack 9 with apache running. i have not configured apache on slack but it seems i can open a browser on my network and get the successful apache web page. with this said sould i be able to do this from outside my network if my router is configured properly? or do i have to enable something? if the router is the problem what should i be looking for to configure the router to route port 80 to the slack box? thanks
well first you have to have port 80 open on your box, and second by using a router you should have a "router setup" page...this will be in the documentation....i know with mine, i just have to type "http://192.168.1.1" and it will prompt me for username/password, and then i can config my router...then i go to the "forwarding" page and type port 80 and the internal ip of the box i want to redirect traffic too....
this is the same type of guidelines you have to follow, but exactly what is the page you use to access your router, i do not know...
you will have to find that out..
i know how to access my router but do not know how to configure it. the docs that came with it are useless. i couldnt find forwarding and i find little help on line. what is virtual network?
First you need a static (permanent) IP address. Second you need to make sure that the port you want to use is open in the firewall (iptables, smoothwall, etc). Third make sure the system can access the internet. Next make sure you can access the system within your network.
A virtual network can be a made up or pretend network that works in a system. VMware uses a virtual network to send data to the host computer to many virtual machines that are running without using a NIC (network interface card). Another kind of a virtual network is two physical seperate networks. In this network, each side of the network may have a seperate netmask or different class of IP addresses. Instead of buying two or more bridges to seperate your networks, you can get a device and program it to be able to act like two or more bridges.
What brand is the router?
Can you access your router by a web browser or by a terminal program like telnet?
