router instead of dlink/dsl modem?

OK, went to roaring penguin to download pppoe stuff and they say that a router may work just as well with out having to compile the kernal for dlink driver install and then installing their pppoe stuff. Excuse me for sounding stupid, but are all routers equal? What kind of connection? ethernet? anything else I need to know? The implication is that this will do away with my need for the pppoe ap, true? Thanks

router is very standard. If you use configurated the DHCP correctly. You can get windows / linux / unix or even your gaming console work without setup.

You will need a standard ethernet card which is really cheap.
