Erratic Pointer movement and similar threat are eliminated by Driver or Bios Update, if this still doesn't solves the issue
you will have to call dell to replace keyboard and palmrest assembly.

It happens on my Inspiron, but it also happens on other computers that I have built. I usually press some buttons or a combo of different buttons to fix it which eventually works sometimes. Another way to fix it is hit the mouse to make it work. I doubt upgrading the BIOS will fix the problem because it is mainly a software problem than a hardware problem. Sure you can update synaptic, but you may have to patch it yourself since it has slow development.
