RHEL5 partition resizing help

Please forgive me if this is a question that falls into the "newbie" category. I feel like I am missing something obvious. I have a default RHEL5 install on a 250GB disk that I cut in half. The top half was to be the OS and various applications and the bottom half was to be a home for local file storage. I can't figure out how to create a partition in the free space and mount it.

I have poked around this site and Google and I have learned the following:
- parted will not work because there are LVM's on the host.

- gparted will not make or make install as advertised. I maybe getting that wrong as well... this is what I see:
[root@xpc gparted-0.3.3]# make
make: *** No targets specified and no makefile found. Stop.
[root@xpc gparted-0.3.3]# make install
make: *** No rule to make target `install'. Stop.
[root@xpc gparted-0.3.3]# less INSTALL
[root@xpc gparted-0.3.3]# make checj
make: *** No rule to make target `checj'. Stop.
[root@xpc gparted-0.3.3]# make check
make: *** No rule to make target `check'. Stop.

- The RH LVM GUI does not 'see' the blank disk space.

- pvdisplay shows me the Free PE but I can't do much from there that I can tell...
--- Physical volume ---
PV Name /dev/sda2
VG Name VolGroup00
PV Size 232.78 GB / not usable 2.71 MB
Allocatable yes
PE Size (KByte) 32768
Total PE 7449
Free PE 3664
Allocated PE 3785
PV UUID iLahdI-8nvE-0Vm9-fTxN-8Fof-Dqdd-f154GC

Is there a cookbook that can help me with this task? I have read all kinds of stuff on partitioning, schemes, strategies and what not. I would really like a "here is a primer on RHEL disk management" that addresses common issues like adding disks or creating partitions. Can you all point me in the right direction?

Thanks in advance.

Herb

Go have a look at tldp.org for the LVM how-to.

That's because gparted shouldn't have to make && make install. You should be doing:
Code:
# up2date -i gparted
If you want to compile from source, get the src.rpm and rpmbuild --rebuild it or install Gentoo.

The above won't help you though, AFAIK gparted doesn't support LVM. If you're in a GUI, you can do:
Code:
#up2date -i system-config-lvm
Then System > Administration > Logical Volume Management

If you're not in a GUI:
http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/e...r/LVM_CLI.html
