RH9: formatting a DDS tape

I am running RH9 on a Dell box with a PowerVault DDS SCSI tape drive. Everything seems to working fine ... the hardware is recognized correctly and I can run the mt command. But....

How do I format a tape? I tried the mt erase command but that just hung. I googled around a bit and saw that I could format with an ftformat command if I install ftape. However I can't get ftape to build after several frustrating attempts. Doesn't seem worth it for one command. What am I missing?

Thanks in advance!
