Cool RH9.0, Thinkpad, Display problems

I just installed RH9.0 on an IBM Thinkpad T20. all appears to run okay except for the display. the display is running on an S3 Savage/IX and the display will not accept resolutions of 1024X768 and beyond. i am stuck with 800x600.

I have done the following:
(1) downloaded the savage driver and configured - no success
(2) downloaded XFree86, configured...etc. however no success...
(3) in desparation I vi'd the xf86 config and config.backup file to include 1024x768 - no success.

the file config is as follows:
# XFree86 4 configuration created by redhat-config-xfree86

Section "ServerLayout"
Identifier "Default Layout"
Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0
InputDevice "Mouse0" "CorePointer"
InputDevice "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard"

EndSection

Section "Files"

# RgbPath is the location of the RGB database. Note, this is the name of the # file minus the extension (like ".txt" or ".db"). There is normally # no need to change the default. # Multiple FontPath entries are allowed (they are concatenated together) # By default, Red Hat 6.0 and later now use a font server independent of # the X server to render fonts.
RgbPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/rgb"
FontPath "unix/:7100"
EndSection

Section "Module"

Section "Device"

I have a T20 too, and I had a similar problem. What you need to do is to edit /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 (that's what it is on my Debian system) and for each of the bitdepths, make the Modes line read >>
Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
This will default X to 1024x768, and it should work.

Have you been able to get hardware-level 3D accelleration to work?

Shack - thanks for the advice. unfortunately, this didn't work - but was part of the needed fix. i received guidance from another source. they, too, said to change the modes (like you said) to: "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"

but also change the following:
HorizSync to 30.0-70.0
VertRefresh 50.0-90.0

this worked and I was able to get my display to 1024x768.

i haven't worked with the 3D accelerator. but if i hear something, I'll let you know.

thanks for the assist.
