RH8, RAID1, Dead Drive

I have aquired a RedHat 8 server and the customer wants me to rebuild his raid mirror since one of the drives is dead.

Now how do i rebuild it? I threw in a new drive and booted up and it didnt rebuild it... so i am kinda stumped.

I read a few posts but none are working.

Could anyone help thanks!

I can provide the information you need to help, but I am not sure what information you may need. :D

Thanks

Welcome to LinuxQuestions!

You need to use raidhotadd to add the new drive to the set. Once this is done it will start to rebuild sliently in background. You'll need to create the necessary partitions before you add the drive. I would suggest you have a look at http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Software-RAID-HOWTO-6.html the HOWTO is a little old but still useful.

Also just to note, it isn't showing the new drive and I am not sure why

jharris 10-14-2003 06:28 PM

What do you mean by isn't showing the new drive? Where are you looking? Have you created any partitions etc?

Actually I havent made any partitions... my bad how do i make partitions that are idential to the other drive?

and thanks for welcoming me

When ever I try and make a partition it seg faults and kicks me out of fdisk :(

Uhm... Thats rather odd. I was going to suggest that you check the remaining drive to see how big the partition is, and create one of the same size on the new disk. What command are you using to start fdisk?

fdisk /dev/hdb

jharris 10-15-2003 05:42 PM

You are running that as root yeah?

heh, yea some one else has set this up, can i clean out the raid stuff and start it from scratch?

hardtarget_x 10-15-2003 05:51 PM

Yes to the root question

jharris 10-15-2003 05:57 PM

You could delete the raid set and start again if you wish, although that won't solve not being able to fdisk the new drive! Note that you would loose all data on the raid set.
