RH 7.0 GE Force 2 MX problems
 

I have an athlon tbird system with a geforce 2 mx 400. I finaly got sick of windows and bought redhat 7.0 from a used books store. I have no previous experience with Linux, so this is all new to me. Instalation went fine ( i installed on a non partitioned drive ) , but when i got to the vid card setup screen, no configurations would work. I opted to skip this and continue on with setup. Finaly when i logged in for the fisrt time and tried to initialize the GUI, it returns me to user prompt and says that no screens can be found, or sompthing to that effect. I have read this is beacuase there are no driver for my vid card, and have downloaded the software for them, but the software is to big for a floppy, and i have no other os on this particualer hard drive. I realy dont wish to uninstall linux, partition this drive, install windows, reinstall linux, and download the drivers. Any help will be greatly apreciated.

you need the drivers from nvidia.

when you configure it you should be able to choose the bog standard VGA server (or SVGA). One of these should of been a choice when you where configuring the graphics card.

Log in as root and do "xf86config" to configure your x server using the generic nvidia driver. This will give you a useable desktop, but with no 3d. To get 3d working go to www.nvidia.com and download the accelerated 3d linux driver (get the .tar.gz format) and install them as per the instructions in the README file.

I installed Linux on a on a dell with a Mach64 vid. card and it worked ok. Resolution was whacked. So I decide to install RH 7.0 on primary pc on second harddrive. Get the same problem with a Nvidia MX 400. Whatever I try, doesn't work.

I've downloaded and installed the current linux Nvidia RPM driver and still no good.

My monitor is a ViewSonic EA771B. This monitor is available and whether I select it or a SVGA, doesn't work.

Any solutions yet?

What error are you getting?
Look in /var/log/xfree86.0.log.

the error is something like: No screens found.

ok here are the errors form /var/log/xfree86.0.log.

guys get redhat 7.3 it works fine for a home pc , then to get 3d runnig cool goon to www.nvidai.com and download both files for redhat 7.3 the GLX and kernel fiels in RPM extension install then both and thats all .

You haven't edited your X config properly skullcowboy, have a look at the readme file, if the NVIDIA_GLX package installed correctly then it will be in /usr/share/doc/NVIDIA_GLX-1.0/

well, i'm still in the trial days of Linux so I gonna try a different flavor; Mandrake 8.2.

I installed Mandrake 8.2 and I'm very impressed. No problems at all.
