Thanks again to farslayer for providing a detailed information on upagrading to Lenny. But as I had mentioned earlier, my Linux machine is not connected to internet. But I did install Lenny.I could get the required resolution 1440x900@60Hz.
Xorg.conf on Lennybeta2 does not give any information about the video card it is using. But Xorg.0.log indicates that xorg-video-intel is probing the system. I also went through the man page of the above mentioned driver and it does mention that my chipset is supported by the installed version of the driver. I am planning to compile Lenny's kernel on Etch and also to install the xorg-video-intel driver shipped with Lenny on Etch. If I get positive results I will inform this forum.
Thanks again to farslayer and David1357
* linux-2.6.24
New linux-image and supporting packages have been added to take advantage of many new and updated device drivers. See the "Limitations" section of this document for more information.
* xserver-xorg-video-intel
A new X driver has been included to add support for the 965GM, 965GME, G33, Q35, Q33 and GM45 (PCI ids 0x2A02, 0x2A12, 0x29B2, 0x29C2, 0x29D2 and 0x2A42) devices. Some cards that were previously supported by the xserver-xorg-video-i810 driver may perform better with the xserver-xorg-video-intel driver. This includes the 945GM, 946GZ, 965G and 965Q devices.
Sorry, had I realized this a few days back it would have saved you some grief..
Check the FAQ about how to modify your sources.list of an etch installation to get the etch and a half updates. http://wiki.debian.org/EtchAndAHalf
Thank you farslayer for the information. All the time I interacted with this forum I felt as if I am getting a professional support. I am working on Etch-n-a half. I will inform the forum about the outcome. Thankyou farslayer again.

Reason: want to submit a feed back
I downloaded the kernel source for etch-n-half and also the xorg-video-intel driver. Using kernel-package I compiled the kernel using the config file of Lenny Beta 2(I did not install any thing else). Then using dpkg -reconfigure xserver-xorg I sleceted "intel".It worked. I have the desired 1400x9000@60Hz resolution.So Etch user's can make a note of this.Thanks to farslayer and David1357.
