If its not the UUID, its going to be the extra controller in the PATA->SATA adapter.

Most of the kit I run is salvaged, this is the first time I've shelled out for a Mobo bundle.
Not like your the only one to have systems like that. Sometimes people get so carried away with 'I want to keep my old stuff' they just make more problems for themselves than they sovle.

For example, I cant find those Startech PATA2SATA adpters for less than about 10 quid in the UK. You could have got a new DVD-RW for 12.50.

Upgrading to a new version doesnt mean you cant tinker, etc. It does mean you wont get hacked so easily.

I just dont get why a lot of people keep on trying to use out of support OSes, and when you're setting up a new system it makes even less sense to me.

The PATA to SATA adapters are connected to my DVD writer which boots perfectly, The other is connected to my Windows XP drive, it boots perfectly as well, my Linux install is on a SATA drive so nothing's in the way. You're probably right about replacing the DVD writer, the Windows hdd had info on it so needed saving.

Looks like there's going to be quite a few people running out-of-support Oses come April, NHS, Government departments, etc.
I won't be alone.

I still prefer to investigate why something doesn't work rather than use the Apple "Reload the Operating System" catch-all fix.
I don't feel that I'm at that point yet. I CAN get the system to boot but want to know WHY I have to cd to the location of the disk UUID, wait a few seconds and then return control to initramfs. Until I've done everything I can think of (or can be advised of) I prefer not to upgrade the OS. You may well be right in that upgrading is the only solution though.

Soadyheid.

Play Bonny!

Here's an update to my last checks. For those of you who read all of this post without deciding to end it all... Thanks for caring!

So... I edited /etc/default/grub and commented out the "quiet splash" line and ran update-grub. Then I rebooted the system and the interesting part is below. Yup! There's lots of it but bear with me. Please?

Gave up waiting for root device. Common problems:
- Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)
- Check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enough?)
- Check root= (did the system wait for the right device?)
- Missing modules (cat /proc/modules; ls /dev)
- ALERT! /dev/disk/by-uuid/<Linux disk UUID> does not exist. Dropping to a shell!

System boots OK from this point…
Still with me?

Questions now are:
1.) Why does it play about with the CD/DVD writer? Is it trying to find something to boot off because it missed the HHD first time round?
2.)What's with the ata6 reference? I've nothing attached to SATA3-6, the CD/DVD is on SATA3-5. Is ata6 a protocol or something?
More investigation required.
As I've got various financial transactions and some backups to do I'm not considering upgrading (to Ubuntu 12.04 according to my update manager) till the beginning of next month Unity here I come, er... Yee Ha?

So, for now, I'll just Play Bonny!

Its the PATA interface standard.

ATA6 = ATAPI-6 = UDMA5 = UDMA100 = Ultra ATA 100. 100MB/sec maximum rate.

"ata6.00: limiting speed to PI04" PIO is the system used before ATA/UDMA, and compared to them its basicly a 'super crippled' mode, PIO4 is 16.7MB/sec maximum rate.

You're got financial transactions todo and so your waiting to get a supported OS until after that? Crazy.
