Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Replacement for 7800 GS

I had just had an XFX 7800 GS video card die, and while it has a "limited lifetime warranty" I may not get warranty service on it since I did not register the card within 30 days of purchase (back in early 07). I'd like to find a replacement that is an nvidia care b/c I have had better luck using nvidia than ATI for graphics acceleration on linux.

Could somebody recommend a cheap, nearly equivalent nvidia pci express card? The heaviest load it will see is WoW in 1440x900 resolution.

Thanks.

It depends on how much is 'cheap' for you, and prices vary by region. But since you're talking 'cheap', I think a 9600 GT will do - correct me if I'm wrong. And you're right, at least for recent cards NVIDIA will fare better than ATI on Linux. The proprietary drivers for Radeon HD 3xxx/4xxx are known for their issues.

By cheap I was thinking probably $50 range. I really don't have much to go by because I have been out of the video card game for 2 and a half years now. With all of the 7, 8, 9, gs, gt, gts combinations where higher numbers aren't necessarily better, I just don't have a frame of reference here. Is there a chart somewhere that shows all of the nvidia cards and how they effectively compare performancewise? I don't need a lot of detail, I would just kind of like to know how they rank.
