Removeable HD errors

Good Day All...

I am using a resource of one of four removeable HDs for my data backups. The HD is replaced with one of the others on a weekly basis as hdb. A HD typically contains 1 partimage and 7 daily /home /root /etc files. Three are Fujitsu 40GBs and one is a 30GB Maxtor. My hda is an updated Libranet 2.8. It works. Except for:

The 30GB Maxtor gives me DMA access errors. I have hdparm -v it and it works for that session but not the next. I have low level formatted using Maxtor app. I have run a low level diagnostic app which reports error free. All my physical checks come back negative.

The question is anything logged in where ever??? that keeps a track of the particular HD parameters. I am not talking about the files system aspect (fstab, etc) but the mechanical part. Specifically does Linux get upset about replacing different size data HDs between power down time?

If this direction is negative then I will look at the bios, HD comptroller, etc.

Thank You
