Hi, a not very creative post coming...
I admit I don't know how to read the hex codes, but to check it you're using the entire hard drive try popping it out of its case (if possible) and connecting it directly (via sata or whatever it uses) to the PC. From there you're sure about firmware issues etc and can modify the disk as you wish. Then you just pop it back in

Hey. I also have a MyBook HDD with this smartware crap on it. The device identifies itself as a HDD and as a VCD that you can't remove. Both partitions seem to be located on the HDD itself. I have removed the HDD from its case and plugged it into my other PC directly via SATA cable. GParted was showing three different partitions on the disk (2 unknown and one HFS+).

I left those alone for now, but other people who formatted the disk manually after removing it from enclosure have reported that the VCD was no longer readable after reassembly, but it still appeared as a device. So the VCD is probably hardcoded in the chipset... I wonder whether its possible to completely remove this VCD by uploading a custom firmware. Anyone tried modding the firmware yet?

Read the LQ Rules, please....you re-opened a thread that's been closed for FOUR YEARS, hijacked it with a different question, and used text-speak. None of which are good.

Open your own thread for your own question, so people can find it. Use a descriptive subject header, and provide DETAILS...just saying "hard drive" tells us nothing, when you don't say what KIND of hard drive, how it's attached, to what kind of machine, running what version/distro of Linux, or if this has EVER worked for you or not.
