RedHat 9 internet config wizard

Ok..I hope I can explain this well (and that i'm posting in the right place)... I have RedHat 9 and when I installed it it recognized my modem. But when I go to Internet Configuration Wizard, select Modem, and click Next, it doesn't recognize it. I tried to go to Terminal and make sure it detected the modem, and i entered echo "atdt5555309" > /dev/ttyS0 and /ttyS1, S2 and S3 but it says access is denied. It says [myname@local.host myname] $$ before it, should it say administrator instead of local.host? The modem is internal and its not a WinAp. Its a CreativeLabs V92 PCI, if that helps any. Other than that I don't know, b/c I don't really know where to look.

at the terminal, type 'su' and enter your root password. The try 'echo "atdat5555309" > /dev/ttyS0'

Your modem is probably configured to only allow root to access it.

I put in 'su' and got into the root, but the echo thing still doesn't do anything. It says Input/Output error. Does anyone know the command I should put in since this doesn't work? Thanks
