Redhat 9 installation error

I am having a problem w/ the installation of Redhat Linux 9 w/ my desktop, the error is "no drives found". The PC I'm using is HP dx5150 w/ amd athlon processor, 256mb of memory & a 80gb SATA HDD.

the words "redhat 9" and "installation" should never be in the same sentence... why are you installing a distro that's 4 years obsolete?? in your case, rh9 doesn't support sata.

adilbhilai 07-17-2007 01:12 AM

you can try this out.
first check cmos and corfirm that your hard disk must be at Primary or Secondary master position
check it and tell me.
sata disk some times configured at third master or fourth master disk. then RHL9 will not be able to identify those disks.

adilbhilai 07-17-2007 01:13 AM

i have installed it in a sata disk w/o any extra s/w.

acid_kewpie 07-17-2007 01:26 AM

not to sound mean or anything, but please don't advocate the installation of redhat 9. it will only lead to more and more troubles, and i guess only keeps getting used becuase 9 is a high number...

Hi Chris,

You mean to say that I cannot install redhat linux 9 to my desktop? but I'm using it now in my other desktop as dual boot to windows.

acid_kewpie 07-17-2007 06:46 AM

there is simply no point ever ever installing redhat 9 these days. it is OLD, don't bother.

rowellski 07-18-2007 12:35 AM

Hi Chris,

Ah okay! sorry I'm just asking... Anyway after a careful thinking, maybe I need to use a raw-write for my RH9 to detect the sata hdd. Could you help me on this?

Best Regards,
Rowell

Again - asking questions about how to install Redhat 9 would be similar to asking for help installing Windows for Workgroups 3.11 It's not actually that old but it might as well be, as it has not been supported for years, as I attempt to emphasize in my sig

The current equivalent to 'Redhat 9' would be Fedora 7

lazlow 07-18-2007 01:39 AM

Redhat 9 predates sata by 4(?) years. It does not know how to deal with it. Further the number of people who have current experience with it is going to be extremely limited. If you install a current OS life will be much easier and we will have a much better chance of helping you.

Centos5 is RedhatEL5 (the current version) with the logos removed. It is free to download and will have support available(updates) for the next 5 years.

Fedora 7 is another fine choice but it will only have updates for about another year. Current version +1 is supported with new versions out about every 6-8 months (F8 is now scheduled for November of 07).

Both these OSs have out of the box sata support.

Good Luck
Lazlow

Hi adilbhilai,

We are trying to install RH9 on a sata drive (80 GB Seagate Barracuda) with P4 3GHz and 1GB RAM. Can you give some more details of your installation.

Please, read the above posts.

Don't even bother. While it may be possible, you would be much better served by using a modern, supported distro like Fedora, Centos, RHEL, Debian, Ubuntu, ... The list is endless. There is NO reason that you need to use Redhat 9.
