Redhat 7.3 and Seagate hard drives
 

Hi all,

Does anybody know of any compatability issues with RH7.3 and Seagate HDs? I'm trying to install 7.3 on somebody's new computer. They've got two Barracuda ATA IVs (ST360021A 60GB and ST340016A 40GB). When i pop in the boot disk and select install in graphical mode, the installer will do a hardware check but I will always get a message saying "no hard drives present" or something to that effect.

I already have WinXP Home edition successfully installed on the 60GB (primary master) and can also see the 40GB no problem (in windows). <1.8Ghz AMD Athlon, 512Mb ram machine>

I have already tested the ISOs i've downloaded, successfully installed RH7.3 on another 1.4Ghz Athlon, 512MB ram using the boot.img for a boot disk. That install went smoothly, but it only had a 40GB Quantum HD and I dual booted it with WinME.

I went to www.redhat.com and looked up the HCL, but it makes no mention of any Seagate hardware. Am I a dork and just missing the obvious? :confused:

ps there is no raid and no scsi, this should be a piece of cake!

Are they set up "cable select" or actually master and slave? Master and Slave is the preferred method of top breeders :D

Ya, thanks for the reply, after i combed through a few other posts, it's one of the things I wrote down that i will take a look at the next time i see the machine. Sucks that i don't have full access to the machine due to conflicting schedules.

Anybody know if there are other boot.img (non-network) files i should be trying instead? Or is there just the one? :)

Silly me, it was the Promise HD controller all along. Stupid me, darn Athlons and their darn motherboards :p

I'll see if there's a boot.img with promise support or i'll just move it off the raid controller and onto the straight IDE.

And to think i got flamed by Seagate tech support too :(

Which Promise controller, support for the newer PDC2026x series just made it to the kernel with 2.4.19, which redhat has yet to release on, might be a bit of a headache to get sorted.

yah it's a PDC20276 that came with a Gigabyte GA-7VRXP mainboard (Promise PDC20276 ATA 133 RAID controller ). I'm checking with Promise right now, but i think i'm hooched for now.:study:

Here's the skinny from 2.4.19, that's a six month NEWER kernel than RH's release kernel:

Promise Ultra33 or PDC20246
? Promise Ultra66 or PDC20262
? Promise Ultra100 or PDC20265/PDC20267/PDC20268

? This driver adds up to 4 more EIDE devices sharing a single
? interrupt. This add-on card is a bootable PCI UDMA controller.


Doesn't look good...

I decided what the heck and downloaded the latest testing kernel, 2.5.32, same support as 2.4.19, they've just barely got anything in there for the pdc20270, best bet is directly from Promise I guess... or finding a Highpoint 370 card.
