Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

REDHAT 6.2 config / modules : usb storage, wired network, x config

Hi

I need some pointers for configuring Redhat 6.2 on a Toshiba Tecra A7 laptop.

The OS is installed, but there are four pieces of hardware that are not yet functional:

+ The video/display for X [laptop has a ATI Mobility Radeon X1600, but only basic SVGA operation is required] - currently set to generic VGA, but gives : no valid modes error.

+ wired network adapter [reported as "Intel Pro/1000 PL" by winXP]

+ usb-storage device [generic 128MB USB flash drive]

+ usb-network adapter or pc-card network adapter [whatever is easiest]

I think the PCMCIA module was installed, but cant see the USB anywhere.

Redhat6.2 (2.2.14-5.0) is specifically required as a development platform.

Any help would be great,

Cheers
Dan.

Due to RH 6.2 being extremely old it is not going to have out the box support for recent hardware. Which includes video, USB and the latest ethernet adapters. AFAIK the oldest kernel that supports USB is 2.2.18. However, upgrading to a 2.4 kernel or later would be better since you will find better support for the rest of your hardware.

May I ask what is specifically driving RH 6.2 as a development platform?

I realise i am asking for trouble using redhat6.2, especially on a toshiba laptop.

The distro is required as the development envirnoment for a single board computer running a linux kernel. The SBC is provided with a custom distribution of RH6.2. (i cannot link it, but please see micro/sys - products - operating systems and tools - linux for more info)

If it is posible to run a current generation distro and build/compile using the redhat6.2 libraries and environment perhaps that would be a better solution.

Cheers
Dan.
