Red Hat enterprise server won't shut down properly

I have a Red Hat enterprise server, that whenever I try to shut it down, just hangs and doesn't turn off. Has anyone experienced this problem/have a solution?

Have no problem shutting down servers by using; /sbin/poweroff

What are you using?

I've done shutdown, and it just says shutting down....hangs there. Also, when I do init6 or /sbin/reboot, it starts to reboot, unmounts everything, then hangs and does not restart.

So have you tried /sbin/poweroff and read man poweroff?

You might want to update/upgrade your SysVinit rpm also.
