recurring hard drives woes
I'm trying to install a new Seagate hard drive, and it has been nothing but trouble. The computer randomly shuts down. I tried it with my only copy of Windows, and for some reason it downgraded DirectX (I had 9c and now I have 9b?). Gentoo and Slackware both boot fine and recognize the drives. Then five seconds later they shut off.
I'm <becoming> fed up with this <pesky> motherboard. I've tried installing two Maxtors, which now both reside in my main box. It's an old, <unreliable> taiwanese board from PCChips (model M836 I think).
I've tried messing with the jumpers, I've tried different IDE channels, and I've even installed an operating system based on some false hope. At once, an hour ago, I thought I had things up and running. But, blithely, Windows decides to shut itself off without any prior warning or error message. Therefore, I am led to believe this has something to do with the motherboard itself, not the drive or the operating system.
Has anyone out there had trouble with this board? Perhaps the onboard IDE controller has somethign to do with it. I'm at a loss.
