[SOLVED] Recovering Data on a Dead Linux Hard Drive.

Does anyone here, can help me on recovering all my files on my defective hard drive.

I am using mandriva 2009.1

If the BIOS cannot detect the drive anymore then it's dead. The only way to recover it now is to take it to a professional service that can mount the platters in a clean room and get the data off.

Have a better backup scheme next time and monitor the drive with SMART often for any changes.

Based on your description this would appear to be a job for a data recovery
company with a clean room.
You have clearly done the obvious which was to power the drive up on an alternative power cable, and listen/feel for the drive to spin up; installed the drive and checked for a BIOS detection (using the machines CMOS setup); and your description of the "clicking" sounds indicates electro mechanical failure.

I'm not sure about the "BIOS not detecting the drive" part. That may be quite fatal. If the clicking noise is triggered because it's just not spinning up, sometimes you can whack on the drive with the plastic or wood handle of a screwdriver to jar it a little to where it unfreezes and spins up. Then back that sucker up immediately, because it may never spin up again. Can't say I've ever checked BIOS to see what it reports for a non-spinning drive. I would assume it would at least detect it, but that's just a guess.

The drive is dead.

Board or platter? The fact that it's really a SCSI drive (System Can't See It

, my guess is that the board is gone. The (never-helpful) clicking is a sign of it, too. Can you swap the pcb with a similar one?

That failing, if you need the data, get the professionals

I just follow some suggestions above. SMART failed when i try to use again the drive. So i planned to backup all the files and use new hard drive.

So did you actually backup the failing drive successfully, or do you just PLAN to back it up?

Yes, i already back up all the files. And dispose the defective drive to prevent reusing it again.
