record and play simultaneously

Hi,

I am using two Pentium IV machine, 1 and 2. 1 is running RedHat 9.0 while 2 is running RedHat Enterprise. Both have same sound card and driver:

82801BA/BAM AC'97 Audio
Manufacturer: Intel corp.
Driver: i810_Audio

I tried to play and record sound simultaneously in machine 1 and it does. I tried to do the same thing in machine 2 but it can not. It say that the sound card is busy or it is not configured properly. I could not find any option about this.

I could not understand why it is different in two machine although the sound card is same. Only a small difference is in OS.

Could you please help me to configure the sound card in machine 2 properly so that it can play and record simultaneously.

Thank you very much for your help.

Manoj

Maybe the one that works is running some sort of sound daemon. If it has KDE installed it is probably running artsd, which would certainly make a difference.

If there is a package that installs artsd (or ESD is another one) it might be worth a try.

Otherwise you could try to upgrade the sound to the latest version of ALSA (at least 1.0.6) which seems to be able to handle multiple inputs OK.

Those RH versions are a bit old tho', aren't they?

RedHat 9.0 is right before they split it off as Fedora Core, isn't it? If I were you, I'd upgrade to the latest version of Fedora Core - I think it's 4. You can get it from fedora.redhat.com.

Anyways, if you're using KDE (don't know a thing about Gnome) then in the KDE Control Center there's a sound setup tool. In order to record and play sound simultaneously you'll need to enable something called "full duplex".

Ok. I changed from Gnome to KDE. I changed to full duplex mode. After changing to full duplex mode, it could not even play the sound. It says the sound card is busy or not configured properly.

Do you know if sound support is built into your kernel? If it is, then make sure that you have the correct drivers enabled. If it's not built in, or you're not sure, then you might wanna try getting the latest drivers from www.alsa-project.org.
