Recommendations for a good Linux-friendly scanner and printer?

I was wondering if people could recommend me a good scanner and printer for use with Linux, or if there are any brands/names I should stay away from. I'm not trying to find something crazy with 40,000,000 DPI or something, just something practical and affordable. Particularly I'm looking for:

Small size
Especially for the scanner. I don't have a lot of deskspace for either device.

Reasonable price
Cost isn't a huge issue for me right now, but I'd like something that's under $100, or under $200 if it's really exceptional.

Decent quality
I'm not a graphic designer or anything. I just do a little art as a hobby and I want to be able to make a good transfer from paper<=>electronic versions.

So, what should I look for?

HP have the best drivers for both scanners and printers, but you'll have to fill empty cartridges manually or buy new (they're expensive )

Yeah I thought HP would be a good bet, since they make some linux-based products (like their laptop). I'm not too concerned about having to refill/buy printer cartridges. Unless something revolutionary happened in the past 4 years since I owned a printer, all of them are like that.

I concur with Leadazide. HP is the way to go. Just go to their website and bring yourself up to speed on their latest products.

Well I was kind of hoping someone could recommend a specific system that they have had a really good experience with. I like to read reviews from people who have actually used the product, but NewEgg doesn't have very many reviews for printers/scanners and I don't see any reviews at Anandtech either... I wonder if I should go after a printer/scanner/fax/microwave combo?

It got a lot of good reviews, but it looks like the scan resolution is a little low, and the design looks a little.....awkward to me.

I have used 3 HP printers, the Deskjet 950c, PSC1110 and Photosmart 7660. The best experiences were with the 950C and and the Photosmart 7660 which is virtually silent. I used an Epson C42UX, but thats ages ago, but it worked well.

Wow thanks. This is exactly what I was looking at, awesome. How is the scan quality? I'm a little curious because it's listed as only 600dpi....,

I like the HP5l and 6l. I can get them for $5-$10. Fix the paper loader thingie and I have a good cheap printer.
