Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Which distro are you using? I have faced same problem for RHEL4u5, I have solved this problem by upgrading kernel.

[edit]My system shows:
root:/home/bb# lspci | grep 816
02:00.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet controller (rev 02)

I use module r8169. This can be compiled in kernel, I think under 100MB or 1000MB (1 GB) ethernet part.

If you are using a stock compilation then perhaps you already have the module but need to remove it from blacklist or otherwise tell it to load.

As root try: modprobe r8169. Does that do anything?
