realtek alc655 integrated sound

Hi,

I need to free up space to install a raid card (why do they keep reducing the number of slots available on motherboards...). So, I've removed my soundblaster card and enabled the integrated sound card. And now I can only have one sound playing at a time.

It's pretty annoying, because I rely on a sound to tell me when I get mail from my work, and yet I also like to listen to music or other sounds. Also, I keep playing a sound, seeing that it's not playing and having to go see what other program I have to close in order to make the sound play.

I have ubuntu breezy badger. I'm running KDE at the moment, but I switch around.

So far I've only found posts here and elsewhere where people describe how to get one sound at a time to work. I want multiple sounds at the same time.

I have tried the various sound systems in KDE and there is no change. I also tried some configuration suggested in the docs for Ubuntu, related to gnome, but there has been no change.

But, I'm confused. Are the settings in KDE only to do with sounds created by Konqueror or Kicker or whatever it is that creates blips and bleeps? With my sound blaster I had no problems playing both streaming audio from real player, and play mail notification sounds using esdplay and play music with xmms, all at the same time.

Advice?

maybe this will help you:

Unfortunately, there's no change. The ubuntu docs had a similar but not the same set of instructions for additions to asound.conf. I also found another set of magic incantations to type into alsa.state (stop the service, edit, start the service). Still no change.

Those are here:

i must admit i dont know where "arts" begins and "alsa" ends in KDE. I have problems before......
