Realtek 8139 + Laptop + Linux = no internet

Hello!

I've one big problem. I've just installed Linux Suse 9. But I've tried Suse 8.1 too. In my laptop, there's a Realtek 8139 Card wich is working perfectly under Win XP. In YAST the card is configured correct too! All settings for inet are made too (IP and so on) but I just can't connect. Any ideas? I'm a complete newbie so please try to explain it, if you've a solution for me!

Thanks a lot at this time!

Please let us know what the output from the commands /sbin/ifconfig and /sbin/lsmod looks like. The first command (ifconfig) shows the configured network interfaces on your system and lsmod tells you what modules (drivers usually) are loaded.

At the shell prompt type

Code:
/sbin/lsmod > mylsmod.txt
and

Code:
/sbin/ifconfig > myifconfig.txt
to redirect the output of the two commands to the two textfiles (they don't need to exist first), then copy them onto a floppy and access them under windows that way, (they'll be in the directory you were in when you typed the commands).

I don't have Windows XP so I don't know, but isn't it possible to mount your windows partition as writeable (so that you could avoid the floppy and just copy the files to C:\ ), or is this a problem to do with NTFS?

Hope this helps.

Cheers
Amos

Downy -- is it a pcmcia card? what make is it? check my thread --- http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...hreadid=144786

I have a similar sounding problem so I pulll out my card, push it back in and [as superuser] do "insmod 8139too" and then "dhclient" --- this gets me a connection. I do not know why it doesn't happen automatically but, for me, it's a temporary solution.

8139too

Hey, I am having the same problem,

as far as pushing a lspci its showing my NIC as the realtek 8139, soo...

i do 'modprobe 8139too' it loads fine but, 'ifconfig eth0" says errors fetching interface... under lsmod the 8139 has '0' under 'Used'

i also notice on my router, the lights the indicate if a node is hooked up are blinking at a constant 2 seconds on 2 seconds off, where i have my laptop pluged in.

zing.

JUST TRIED THIS.

if i unload the module and reload it and quickly do a ifconfig etho i will get information and under lsmod i will have a 1 under used, but seconds later the one will go to 0 and ifconfig etho will fail.

WIERD
