I'm running OpenSUSE 11, and I want to be able to capture a security cam feed from RCA composite video. I've found several USB solutions, but they all say windows only. In my experience with other such devices, this often means that their silly editing/managing software (which is never particularly useful anyway) only runs on windows while the device itself is plug-and-play across platforms. However, I can't tell if this is true in this case without actually buying and trying the product. So, does anyone have a suggestion for a good product that they've used?

In fact I bought it because other Linux users have had success with it. But it's a PCI card, not sure that will work for you. I tend to shy away from USB devices and so did not go this route. But basically lots of devices that are supposedly "Windows only" use chipset's that V4L (Video4Linux) have supported for a long time. Some don't. So find out what the chipset is and do your homework. I have read of several USB devices working with Linux, Google is your friend, in this case. But hopefully someone here can chime in with personal experience.

Thanks. Yeah, the reason I can't really use a PCI card for this is it's a university computer, and I'm not really allowed to pop it open and fiddle with the insides.
