Raid Level 1

Hi,

I am have a server running a 80Gb ATA drive and a 40Gb back up drive.
I plan to upgrade to 2 SATA 80Gb Raid 1 software.

I have a maybe stupid question.
Is it a complete drive mirroring (ie: is the boot sector and all system files also mirrored), because from what I can read, it seems that it is a partition mirroring...
So, if one drives fail, is the system able to boot from the remaining disk?

Thanks,

macadam

I personally actually never did setup a raid 1, cause I usually am doing raid 5 if I do have a raid setup, but if I am not mistakening, I think your right, it does only mirror partitions.

You'd have to write the MBR to both disks, so of course if one drive fails, you set the healthy one as the main drive, and then repeat the process with the new drive inserted with partitioning and then writing the MBR.

I am sure someone can correct me if I am wrong, but I am pretty sure thats how it works.
