Don't worry about the ATI Control Panel, mine says the same thing.
Whats important is the xorg.log file or xfree86.log file, depending on which you are using. (/var/log/xxxxx.log)
If you do a search in the file for "chipset" and continue through the file you should see a line that says something like "(--) CHIPSET FOUND RADEON X600 (RV380 xxxx) FOUND". I believe the X600 chipset is either RV380 or R380 depending on your card.
Next is getting DRM and DRI to work properly. As for that, good luck, I haven't got mine working yet, but I'm not giving up.
