Radeon X-700 Graphics card Issue since upgrading to 12.04 LTS

Hello all!

I am a total noob to LQ and relative noob to Linux in general.

I have an issue that I was hoping one or more of you experts could assist me with.

I have an older computer but it works perfectly for what I do which is surf, chat, email, videos and music.

It's a home built tower with an Asus M2N-E mobo with an AMD64 Dual Core, 2.5ghz chipset, 2 GB Corsair 800 mhz DDR2 RAM and a Radeon X700 PRO 128MB PCI-E DVI VGA card to a brand new, Asus VE-278Q monitor. (27" 1920x1080 2ms Full HD HDMI LED Backlight 300 cd/m2 ASCR 10,000,000:1).

I was using Lucid Lynx until a few days ago and was using the DVI out to run the monitor flawlessly in full HD resolution. Now, after upgrading to 12.04LTS Precise Pangolin, when I try to use DVI I get "DVI NO SIGNAL" at start up and the monitor goes to standby. When I connect VGA, it works and supports the full 1920x1080, but of course is not digital.

Can anyone offer me any suggestions as to what went wrong with the upgrade or how to fix it? When I look for the driver info, it says "unknown". (Not sure what driver it was working with 10.04, either. It just worked from minute one of the install). When I use System Test in Precise Pangolin, it says "ATI Technologies Inc RV410 [Radeon X700 Pro (PCIE)] Driver in use: radeon" It also says that glxinfo is not installed. Could this be my problem? If so, how would one going about remedying this?

I appreciate any and all help. I sure hate to think I just bought this new monitor and have to use VGA!

Thanks, lads.

Paddy O

Welcome to LQ.

It sounds like you have the radeon (OSS) driver, from the xf86-video-ati package. You can check if it supports hdmi on your card.
The alternative would be the proprietary blob from ATI/AMD if they still do one for your card.

Please show us your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file, and the output from 'xrandr --verbose', both while having this monitor hooked up to the DVI port.

business_kid, he's asking about DVI not HDMI. That video card definitely does not have HDMI. And the proprietary driver does not support that GPU.

Well, I would more than happy to do that for you, however when the monitor is hooked up to DVI the monitor never turns on so I cannot see anything to even find my way to terminal and then of course I could not see the results. It simply says "DVI NO SIGNAL" then the monitor auto powers off.

Would it help you if I had the results of that query while hooked up to VGA and simultaneously having the DVI cable hooked up? I would assume it would report findings for the source in use which would be VGA, but maybe it reports both?

Thanks a million for the reply.

Here is the output of the Xandr - verbose command while viewing under VGA:

Sorry but I was forced to break up the X.org file into three separate posts due to character count restriction.

Thanks for the help.

All of the above outputs were copied and pasted while using VGA connection. Unsure if I need to have both VGA and DVI connected to get this information for you, but as I have said before, I am unable to use DVI connection solely due to no signal and therefore, no ability to see anything.

Would maybe a clean re-install of Precise Pangolin be a shortcut to a solution? I have a 64bit copy of the .iso burned to disc that when opened, shows multiple files, so I think it is a good copy. I might need help however in finding the disk partitioner screen, as I am finding it VERY difficult to find things I normally worked with such as System Administtrator and Preferences menus in the new distro. 10.04LTS seemed so much easier with the drop down menus in my opinion. Maybe I am missing something?

Sure hope this helps.

Cheers!

We need these outputs from when the monitor is connected to the DVI port (and only the DVI port). You can have a different monitor connected to the VGA port, but not the monitor you are having problems with.

Also, in the future, either please attach your log files or use a service like http://pastebin.com/

If you must include them in your post, use

tags around the them.

Hey Adam,

Thanks for the reply.

So let me make sure I have this straight... I can have a different monitor hooked up to the VGA port (to see what I am doing) AND have the 27" monitor that is having trouble receiving the DVI signal hooked up to the DVI out even though it is not working and this will provide you the information you need?

If this is the case, I will have to try to get an extra monitor somewhere. As is typical for me, I just liquidated two older flat screens about two weeks ago and only have the one currently.

Do you think the clean install option would be worth trying?

Yes.

I don't see why it would make any difference, but if you have a LiveCD of 12.04, you could always try it without doing a clean install.

Hey Adam,

Thanks again.

My thought was that if there was an old driver left over from 10.04LTS that was not deleted with the install of 12.04, that the two drivers may be conflicting each other, or the driver that was in 10.04 (that was working with DVI) was removed and 12.04 doesn't have the same driver anymore?

Seems unlikely, but I thought something like that may have happened.
I will try the liveCD though. That's a great idea.

I will post later with results.

Thanks a million.

Question Video card recommendations?

Okay guys, well, I am just going to try to swap out my current graphics card (ATI Radeon X700 Pro) as now the fan on the darn thing is buzzing on like an orbital sander. I figure as opposed to trying to replace a fan at $25, I may as well kill two birds with one stone and get the new card and hope and pray that Ubuntu 12.04 LTS has a driver installed to run it.

Can anyone give me a few recommendations for a new graphics card under $125 (USD) that would be a good choice with my machine and hopefully plug and play with Precise Pangolin? I'd like full HD support and preferably one not requiring a fan. I don't game much, but I do like nice graphics when watching movies and viewing photos and home video on the computer. The specs for my current card are here:

http://reviews.cnet.com/graphics-car...=mncolBtm;rnav

BTW, my PC specs are as follows:

460 Watt PSU
ASUS M2N-E mobo
AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4800+
size: 2500MHz
capacity: 3700MHz
width: 64 bits
clock: 200MHz

RAM = 2 GB DIMM 800 MHz DDR2 memory. (About to upgrade to 6 GB by the way).

cache:0
description: L1 cache
physical id: a
slot: L1 Cache
size: 128KiB
capacity: 128KiB
capabilities: synchronous internal write-back data
*-cache:1
description: L2 cache
physical id: b
slot: L2 Cache
size: 512KiB
capacity: 512KiB
capabilities: synchronous internal write-back unified

Let me know if you need further specs to make a good recommendation.

Thanks in advance for any and all replies!

Cheers,

Paddy
