Radeon 9200se w/ATI drivers - black screen!

Hello,

I am trying to get a Radeon 9200SE to work under Mandrake 9.2

Vesa drivers worked OK, but without 3d acceleration, so I downloaded the fglrx package from ATI's homepage and installed it according to the instructions. I have compiled a kernel module fglrx.o (by executing make and make install, as it was stated in the instruction), and chose to use an external AGP/GART module, which is also present in my system.

However, when I type 'startx' in bash, the screen turns black and the system hangs (Ctrl+Alt+Bksp etc. don't work at all).

When I uncomment the ' Load "dri" ' part in my XF86Config-4, the X-server loads fine, but quite obviously I don't have direct 3d rendering :(

The funniest thing is that when I try to enable DRI and the computer hangs, there are no errors in the /var/log/XFree86.0.log file!

Does anyone have a clue what can be wrong?

Have you got any idea what the problem can be? I made sure I have in /etc/modules both agpgart and fglrx, in this order.

One more thing: if I comment the ' Load "dri" ' line in XF86Config-4, I get a bunch of 'unresolved symbols':

(...)

but it may be just an effect of trying to initialize DRI without loading it...

Please help... :)

same problem I think

Hi I have the same problem sort of, I load everything ok fglrx nvidia-agp ( motherboard nforce2) and I get 3d, I have a tv card which works perfectly with TVTime but when I start XawTV or zapping I get the exact problem you get. I have an Asus A7N8X -E deluxe motherboard which uses the nforce2 ultra 400 chipset and a radeon 9800se. I think my problem has to do with the overlay side of things but I am not sure.

manuelkuhs 04-14-2004 07:39 AM

Hey, I got exactly the same problem with exactly the same card:-(
If you work out a fix, could you post it here? Thanks.

daemonTED 05-16-2004 12:07 PM

hmm, well, this does seem to be a problem...

unfortunately i do not have much in the way of answers.

i run debian, so when i downloaded the drivers i had to 'alien' the .rpm file before i could use it to convert it to a debian package. from what i have been seeing in linuxquestions, this doesn't seem to be a problem.

when i run 'dpkg --force-overwrite -i fglrx-4.3.0-3.7.6.deb' (or whatever the name of the file is, it installs and i am able to run the Xserver. this however leaves me without 3d rendering :(. only 2d acceleration is present.

about 5 months ago i had the same problem (i have since had to format my computer for various reasons) and, at the time, i found a way of fixing it, thanks to linuxquestions and some of it's users (thanks guys).
the solution was the above mentioned ./make.sh in /lib/modules/fglrx/build_mod and ./make_install.sh in the parent directory.
since reinstalling debian, i have try to re-impliment this procedure and i wind up having the (also) above-mentioned black-screen problem.
one thing i just remembered was that previously i had also edited a line in build_mod/agpgart_be.c from via_generic_setup to via_kt400_setup (this is specific to my motherboard). on this installation i have tried the ./make.sh... ./make_install.sh process with both the edited agpgart_be.c and the original. both produced the black screen prroblem.

basically i, like you guys by the look of it, am rather confused.

i am just hoping that someone reads these posts and is able to help all of us out.

my specs (off the top of my head) are:

AMD Athlon 2000+
768MB RAM
ATI Radeon 9600se
KX600 Pro M/board (kt600 chipset)
running debian unstable
kernel-version 2.4.18

daemonTED 05-16-2004 12:09 PM

oh, and X4.3.0

daemonTED 05-17-2004 11:49 AM

well, i can happily say that i have just got 3d working :D. i don't know if you guys have found the solution elsewhere on linuxquestions or not, but i will write what i have learned here just in case.
firstly, i simply could NOT get it to work on kernel 2.4.18. i found a page recently that has a chart regarding the drivers functionality, and the earliest driver it mentioned was 2.4.25. So, MarasW, since you specified your kernel as being 2.4.22-<patch> (whatever patch is was), i would suggest you upgrade your kernel.
the chart i looked at seemed to suggest kernel 2.6.4 if debian/unstable is being run. so i upgraded to it. it was a little tricky, but module-init-tools seemed to fix any problems i was having with the compile.
once i had changed my kernel, 3d still didn't work.
as i mentioned in my first post in this thread i ran ./make.sh and ./make_install.sh in /lib/modules/fglrx/build_mod and /lib/modules/fglrx respectively.
before i upgraded my kernel, it would compile successfully. but when i would try to load the Xserver, i would get that black screen problem.
after i upgraded my kernel, X loaded successfully, but still no 3d.
here's the trick:
(what i have discovered is-) it is advisable to run a kernel at least as high as 2.6.4.

(this information is on other posts, but i will include it for ease of reference. assuming that you guys are still faced with this problem, you will likely get notified of my post via email.)

firstly, run lspci.
for me, this is the important line:
0000:00:00.0 Host bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8377 [KT400/KT600 AGP] Host Bridge (rev 80)
the particularly important part is the number 8377 as it governs the required actions that come next.
in /lib/modules/fglrx/build_mod/ there is a file called agpgart_be.c . for some reason, apparently poor driver programming ;), this file needs to be edited.
with my chipset (the four digit number being the main indicator) i have to look for this:
{ PCI_DEVICE_ID_VIA_8377_0, #note the 8377
PCI_VENDOR_ID_VIA,
VIA_APOLLO_KT400,
"Via",
"Apollo KT400",
via_generic_setup }, // AGP v2

what has to be done here is to edit the line
via_generic_setup }, // AGP v2

so that it says
via_kt400_setup }, // AGP v2

what is very important is that you edit appropriately for your chipset. my assumption is that if you match the above mentioned four digit (i have just realised that it is not /necessarily/ four digits in length) number correctly, the line above the one that requires editing should be fairly indicative of what you need to replace the word 'generic' with.

note: BEFORE UPGRADING MY KERNEL, I GOT THE BLACK SCREEN SYSTEM-HANG PROBLEM WITH OR WITHOUT EDITING AGPGART_BE.C!!!

i sincerely hope this post is useful.
i also hope that it is comprehensible ;)
