Question Radeon 7000 Support?

I just can't manage to get my Radeon 7000 working in anything beyond 800x600 framebuffer. I've tried a few distros and none seem to work. The ATI Radeon Linux drivers start at the Radeon 8500. Any pointers?
I'm currently using PCLinux in what seems to be ALT mode w/ Framebuffer.

I have an Asus card with a Radeon 7000 chip and configured it yesterday in Slackware using xorgconfig. To succeed you will need to know the horizontal and vertical sync frequency ranges of your monitor, how much video ram you have and carefully choose the correct driver for the card. I selected the generic Radeon driver. The program asks you to select the video modes and color depths you want to use. It worked on the first try. It also asks you to choose a keyboard and mouse.

try setting

Code:
Section "Device"
    Identifier "device1"
    VendorName "ATI Technologies Inc."
    BoardName "ATI Radeon"
    Driver "fbdev"
    Option "DPMS"
Driver to "ati" or "radeon"
ATI or Radeon driver support may need to be installed, but should come with the distro.
