Radeon 7000 and AMD Duron
 

I know this isn't directly a Linux problem, but it's neccassary to run my Linux box.

Ok, so CompUSA says that the Radeon 7000 will work with AMD Duron. I buy, go home, RTFM, and find out that Radeon 7000 does not work with AMD type mainboards, and that I need to upgrade my BIOS. My BIOS is made by American Megatrends Inc. (AMIBIOS) and their site says to go to my mainboard manufacturers site, and get the update there. My mainboard is a PC Chips M810, and I can't find any BIOS updates. I do have onboard graphics, but they suck, and the point of having a gfx card is to use it.

So does anyone know how I can use my gfx card without switching to Intel? Thanks in advance for help!

There's nothing wrong with the Radeons and AMD boards... there used to be an AGP bug, but that's been kernel corrected now if I remember right... where did you get this information?

Also, what kind of grief is X giving you?

I don't have a problem with Linux, it's that with my gfx card plugged in, when I boot, I don't get anything on screen. My board won't recognise it. There is supposed to be some kind of fix somewhere according to the manual for my card, but I can't find it.

Wait, I'm a little confused, the machine boots, you get a BIOS post beep, it displays drive info, blah blah blah, and then LILO loads, and then you hit enter for "Linux" and the screen goes blank? Or is it some other step along the way?

No, when I would boot up, I would get nothing. No bios screen, no memory check, no difference on monitor between computer on and computer off.

But now, for some wierd reason of which I have no clue, it has decided to work. All I did was put it in and out of the board lots of times.

it appears that it may just not have been seated in the slot properly!

usually if you dont get anything working after installing a graphics card, or moving a computer, the card can get unseated - which is why some of the newer board have this retention clip on the agp - to prevent its movement in transit!

nothing wrong with your config, just remmber to seat the card properly!

Is there also a bug with Radeon 9600 Pro and AMD Athlon 2400+ ?

Maybe you'll have to disable the onboard graphics in the bios
settings, to make everything work. :)

Many Radeon or Geforce cards do not work in certain chipsets. My Radeon VE doesn't work with my VIA KX133 chipset but it works with my INTEL chipsets. Though my Radeon 64 VIVO (very first Radeon cards) works with my VIA KX133. Strange, ATI must be using different addressing for each video card that makes certain chipsets screw up.

I suggest go to http://www.aberdeeninc.com and look for your chipset or something similar to see what video card works.

Masta-G, what motherboard (chipset) do you have.

the radeon 7000 does work with your board i ahve the same one as you i had some problems at first. try removing the card booting you should get a post screen then go to bios and disable onboard video then select agp for video then save exit and turn off pc the put card in it should work now. hope this helps.
