rack mount keyboard/mouse (laptop-like) always clicking with twm

i just got a rack mount keyboard and mouse where the mouse is like a laptop pad; you move your finger over it to move the mouse. anyways, for some reason if i have not installed kde/gnome with FC5, the mouse acts as if it is always clicking. i have tried to install gnome/kde after the fact, but it does not help at all. the only way i have seen it work when installing a graphical user environment from initial build. anyone have any ideas? the two things i can think of are

1. the correct driver is not installed
2. the window behavior is set to focus on whatever window is under the mouse, and that is messing it up.

if anyone has seen this problem or has a fix, thanks in advance.
