Quad core processor

Will the 2.6 Linux kernel recognize the Quad core processor as having 4 CPU's? If I just install the basic SMP kernel, will that do it??? Someone told me that Linux can recognize up to 255 processors.

The kernel is what detects the CPU's and yes if you put in a Quad core and SMP is enabled for atleast 4 CPU's then it will detect 4 CPU's, if you have 2 QUADS and SMP is enabled for more then 8 CPU's, then you will see 8 CPU's
