Did you try reconfiguring x? dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 (xserver-xorg for etch/sid) You might make a copy of your xfree86 config file before doing this in case you have other settings you changed.
yes, however that did nothing to help with the fact that there is no /dev/psaux or /dev/input/mice for my mouse.
i made progress by plugging in a usb mouse, which created a /dev/input/mice file and functioned correctly (X started). then, reverting to the ps2 mouse i could still launch X (/dev/input/mice now there) but it was obviously not recieving any input from the ps2 device.
so, my problem persists in that my mouse doesn't seem to be detected correctly by the 2.6.8 debian kernel.
How did you update your kernel? via apt-get/synaptic/aptitude or did you compile yourself? Do you have your old kernel handy? Does it boot up and detect your mouse? If so, can you copy the config file and then compare it afterwards? Sorry shooting in the dark a bit here since I've never heard of such a problem....
