Promise Ultra66 8 drive raid not working

I have two Promise Ultra66 IDE controllers each with 4 hard drives about 15gb each. Four of the hdds are Western Digital, three are Quantum Fireball, and the last is a Maxtor. With every distro I have tried not one boots correctly even to install it. I have tried Slackware, Knoppix, and Deriks boot and nuke. I tried using only one controller and still no luck. I read online that there was problems with the Quantum drives and their firmware. All distros I used were based on the 2.4 kernel. Do you think it could be solved if I used a 2.6 based kernel. This problem is only in linux as I am able to see all hdds if I load Windows. Any Ideas?

Thanks,
Mike
