promise sata/raid asus boards

i've got the notorious promise controller on my asus P4PE mobo.

the controller is a PDC20376
mandrake 9.1
kernel-2.4.21-0.25mdk

whem i compile their driver, i get a list of unresolved symbols.
insmod fails because of the unresolved symbols.
promise offers no support for driver source code. (wish i checked this out when i bought the board)

i've read the other posts and there isn't much insight. just some lucky/unlucky people it seema
