processor temperature and trip_points

Hi,

I have some problems with the cpu temperature of my new Toshiba satellite pro A300 laptop.
While using windows the temperature is always between 40 50 C in linux (Slackware 13) the cpu gets hot faster (between 55 and 65) also with a small load.

The fan starts automatically only when the temperature reach 70.
Code:

 critical (S5): 114 C
  passive: 114 C: tc1=2 tc2=5 tsp=300 devices=CPU0 CPU1
  active[0]: 70 C: devices= FAN
So I tried to change the trip_points manually:

Code:
echo 90:0:52:52:50 > /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/THRM/trip_points"
but I got "echo: write error: Input/output error".Maybe because is not possible change them anymore as this article explain:http://lwn.net/Articles/244595/.

I also tried to manually start the Fan
Code:
echo 0 > /proc/acpi/fan/FAN/state
But nothing change the fan is always on.

Could someone explain me why the cpu gets so hot and How can I do to change my settings????

Thanks
Davide

You may well know more about this than I...

You have tried the command "top" to tell you about the load on the system at a given level of activity? If you have not as yet done so, you could run "top" and something similar in Windows and compare, looking for some program or activity that may be creating an extra load.

You can use something like "cpufrequtils" or its Slackware equivalent, to set the speed of the CPU, setting it to run at a low frequency at low load. A part of the problem could be that the CPU is set to run at its maximum at all loads.

However, there may be no unreasonable demand on the CPU, only a problem that the fan doesn't start before the temperature passes 70c. Setting the CPU to run slower might help, but is not the solution.

You cannot directly edit the line "active...FAN", changing 70 C to 35 C?

There is also a command "fancontrol", but this and other commands depends on acting together with the motherboard and BIOS. What does the system manual and specifications tell you about sensing and regulating temperature? What is available in the BIOS?

I suffered here with slamd64 in it's early days. I have a HP6715S

You are running acpid? there is a thing /proc/acpi/dsdt which is read in from the bios and should tell acpi when to switch things on & off. Try running sensors-detect and get lm_sensors to load the appropriate modules for your box. Lurk on Toshiba type sites and look for clues. Check your kernel config and enable the Toshiba options. The way I sorted mine was I rebuilt the kernel acpi section modelled after fedora (RHEL) and then things that used not to work suddenly started behaving properly. Can't be more specific. Can send you a .config if you want one.

Ok thanks for all this hints, I'll try all of them as soon as I can and let you know the results..
Now I can only say that using top and process explorer on windows I couldn't notice any apps an Linux that adds extra load...

Not a new problem...

Fan control seems to be a common problem with Toshiba and linux. See this thread and its links.

I tried with toshiba_apci but is not compatible...

Thanks

I just pulled this thread out of the bottom of my spam folder. It seems gmail slipped up.
Are you sorted? What did sensors_detect find?
