Problems with Nvidia card (3d acceleration)
 
Hi!

I've configured a intrepid box (kubuntu) to use the nvidia drivers (from packages). The xorg log shows that the driver is working:

However, when I try o run the nvidia settings application, it says the nvidia driver is not running. What's going on?

It's kubuntu intrepid running on a Presario V3317 laptop.

2. have you checked that DRI is working as expected via 'glxinfo'?
3. are you trying to run the nvidia settings within X or from a virtual text console?
4. are you trying to run nvidia settings as root or as a normal user?

Since DRI is not working it suggest you do:

export LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose
Then try 'glxinfo' again and see if more information is given.

It could be any of:
1. libraries not linked properly
2. xorg.conf is not set up correctly
3. library installed is not compatible with your version of:
a. kernel
b. libc
c. xorg

Well, let's see what I've found. I ran glxinfo with the flasg and I got exactly the same output... but then I deviated to solve a keyboard problem in the same box... and boy, this is weird. It turns out that the arrow keys weren't working at all and the altgr was behaving as <intro>. I noticed that in KDM, the keys worked normally, but on kde, they worked improperly.... so.... I whent to the VTs and shutdown KDM, started x by hand and then started kde by hand too:

And once there, I got DirectRendering working, was able to start compiz by hand (compiz --replace) got the keyboard to work correctly. I also didn't get one (apparently) harmless message about a crashed application I was getting when starting kde from kdm. So... the problem seems to be something in KDM cause once I skipped it, I got everything working normally. Any ideas?
