Problems with Logitech QuickCam 4000 Pro

Hello all --

I'm trying to get a Logitech QuickCam 4000 Pro to work under CentOS 4.3. I'm not using the stock CentOS/RHEL kernel but using a custom built kernel (2.6.17.6).

built and installed xawtv version 3.95

The following messages appear when the camera is plugged in :

Code:
Jul 28 13:44:26 pele kernel: usb 3-2: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 2
Jul 28 13:44:27 pele kernel: usb 3-2: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
Jul 28 13:44:30 pele kernel: Linux video capture interface: v1.00
Jul 28 13:44:30 pele kernel: pwc Philips webcam module version 9.0.2-unofficial loaded.
Jul 28 13:44:30 pele kernel: pwc Supports Philips PCA645/646, PCVC675/680/690, PCVC720[40]/730/740/750 & PCVC830/840.
Jul 28 13:44:30 pele kernel: pwc Also supports the Askey VC010, various Logitech Quickcams, Samsung MPC-C10 and MPC-C30, Jul 28 13:44:30 pele kernel: pwc the Creative WebCam 5 & Pro Ex, SOTEC Afina Eye and Visionite VCS-UC300 and VCS-UM100.
Jul 28 13:44:30 pele kernel: pwc Logitech QuickCam 4000 Pro USB webcam detected.
Jul 28 13:44:30 pele kernel: pwc Registered as /dev/video0.
Jul 28 13:44:30 pele kernel: usbcore: registered new driver Philips webcam
The above messages don't indicate any likely problems. However, when starting xawtv all I get is a gray area. I tried resizing the window to see if that had any effect, but did not work. When executing xawtv the camera light does turn on, indicating that xawtv is communicating with the camera.

Anyone have any thoughts?

Thanks for feedback that one may provide.

Well it turns out that the pwc module that was built with the 2.6.17.6 kernel is broken and doesn't provide the proper compression needed. The fix is to download pwc-10.0.12-rc1

After building and installing pwc-10.0.12-rc1 the cam worked as expected.

If someone is having similar problems, I hope the above will be useful.
